No New Posts   Bankhead Closure as of 4/26/17

April 26, 2017

Just a heads up if you use the Bankhead Tunnel on Saturday mornings.

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) The Alabama Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the Bankhead Tunnel in downtown Mobile will be closed Saturday morning.

The closure to car traffic will open up the tunnel to pedestrians and bicycles. The closure begins Saturday, April 29, at 6 a.m. and will remain closed until 8 a.m.

ALDOT says they plan to close the tunnel on Saturday morning for the next several weeks. A similar closure was done in 2016 and received positive feedback from citizens.

For drivers in the area Saturday morning, alternative routes include I-10/Wallace Tunnel or Alternative Highway 90 and the Cochran-Africatown Bridge.

ALDOT is warned all pedestrians and cyclists that travel the tunnel to use safe speeds and extra caution.

No New Posts   Paddle Smart Identification Sticker

April 26, 2017

I recently saw a new report about these stickers. They are meant to be able to return lost paddle boats that may have gone adrift. By putting your information on the sticker, hopefully your boat will be returned. It also prevents the Coast Guard from looking for a person(s) if only the boat went adrift. They can immediately call the number on the sticker to see if someone is or is not missing.

You can pick one up at the Dauphin Island Coast Guard Station from the watch standers between 0800-1600 (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). I would imagine that the one in Gulf Shores also has them.

No New Posts   Mon Louis Island Restoration Update

April 25, 2017

From Mobile Bay National Estuary Program FB page.

Restoration of the northern tip of Mon Louis Island draws near with final grading and excavation of the tidal creek. The project includes shoreline stabilization with a continuous rock breakwater positioned roughly along the 1995 footprint, creation of approximately 4 acres of marsh, and dredging of the Fowl River navigational channel. The Alabama Conservation Corps will be on hand Friday morning to plant marshland vegetation. This project was designed by Thompson Engineering, funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and managed by the Mobile Bay NEP.

No New Posts   It's that time of the year again....

April 20, 2017

It's that time of the year again when we have new boaters on the water that may not be aware of some basic boating rules and regulations. Maybe some seasoned boaters that may have forgotten some. Please take a moment to look over these boating guides. Some of the information may save your life, someone else's or at least a ticket from the Coast Guard or Marine Patrol.

I recently saw a youtube video of a family taking an outing on their boat. The infant child onboard was strapped in a car seat with no pfd on. They are called accidents because they are not planned. Just image something happen and that child went overboard still strapped in the car seat. The infant is unable to manipulate the strap locking device to get out. The seat is not a flotation device and no guarantee it will float up right to keep the head out of the water. Under Alabama Boating Regulations a child under the age of 8 must wear a pfd at all times on any vessel except when in an enclosed cabin.

No New Posts   Mobile County 'Guns Down, Reels Up' initiative

November 23, 2016

http://local15tv.com/news/fighting-back/fighting-back-guns-down-reels-up-initiative

What does fishing and gun violence have in common? Absolutely nothing! But there is a group in Mobile County using fishing as a way to get kids and teens off the streets. They call it the 'Guns Down, Reels Up' initiative, and it's their way of fighting back.

Nine-year-old Tim hale is learning how to fish. But it's not just about the catch, he's also learning life lessons on how to use a sport like fishing to help make right choices and stay off the streets and out of trouble. It's something his father and fellow fishermen are using to reach other teens in the area.

"Oftentimes we talk about them saying all they want to do is hang on the corner but if we just show them how to fish show them why we like fishing, one day they'll come fishing instead of hanging out and not get killed or murdered," said Tim Hale Jr.

The long term goal of 'Guns Down, Reels Up' is to use fishing to as a way to get kids to turn to something more claiming instead of violent.

"We can pull three or four kids off the street that would be something. But why pull three or four when we can pull 300 or 400!" said fishermen Kenneth Chatman.

Chatman said fishing has always kept him grounded.

"Get out on the water, meditate, think about my future," he said. "It's my comfort zone."

Organizers are planning on holding a big fishing tournament and the spring for teens. Bop's Kitchen has even volunteered to fry all the fish the kids catch.

No New Posts   REMINDER: STATE BURN BAN STILL IN EFFECT

November 17, 2016

Due to severe drought conditions across much of the state, an increased risk of wildfire exists when hunters return to the woods for the opening of gun deer season on November 19. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) reminds hunters that a statewide no burn order is in effect. The burn ban affects all outdoor burning including campfires on private lands, all Wildlife Management Areas and in Alabamas National Forests.

Until we get sufficient precipitation, the woodlands of Alabama are very prone to wildfires, said Keith Gauldin, ADCNRs Wildlife Section Chief.  We encourage hunters to remain cautious and avoid building any campfires during this period until we get some much-needed rain.

According to the Alabama Forestry Commission, there have been 1,749 wildfires in the state since October 1, 2016, burning more than 21,000 acres. Currently, all 67 Alabama counties are included in the no burn order, which will be in effect until further notice. Penalties for violating the burn ban include up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $500.

To lower the risk of accidentally starting a wildfire this hunting season, please practice these fire prevention tips.
  • Avoid parking in tall dry grass. Vehicle exhaust pipes can potentially ignite the grass.
  • Be mindful of any sparks generated by discharging a firearm.
  • Do not discard cigarette butts from a vehicle window or near any potential fire source.
  • When hauling a trailer avoid dragging chains. Sparks generated against the pavement can ignite grass along the roadway.
  • If possible, carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.
The most successful hunting trip is a safe one, Gauldin said. With this years prolonged drought, that includes practicing wildfire prevention.

For more information about current drought conditions and the states no burn order, visit www.forestry.alabama.gov.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabamas natural resources through four divisions: Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.  To learn more about ADCNR, visit www.outdooralabama.com.

No New Posts   State Parks to Offer Free Admission to Veterans on November 11-13

November 10, 2016

http://www.outdooralabama.com/state-parks-offer-free-admission-veterans-november-11-13

Veterans Sponsorship Program to Expand in 2017

In honor of Veterans Day, Alabama State Parks will waive the entrance fee for veterans at all state parks on November 11-13, 2016. Anyone who indicates they are a veteran will be admitted into the park day-use areas without charge. No identification will be required.

Veterans have been leaders in the development of state parks and other public lands across the country. Several of Alabamas state parks were developed with help from the Civilian Conservation Corps, which employed numerous veterans.

Our parks and public lands are places for reflection and serenity, and they stand as a tribute to those who have served our great nation, said Greg Lein, State Parks Director. It is important for us all to honor our veterans and other partners who make our parks system possible.

Next year, Alabama State Parks plans to expand its Veterans Sponsorship Program. The program allows park patrons to sponsor free access for veterans to park sites that have an entrance fee. Currently, the program offers veterans free sightseeing, discounted fishing permits ($6 for veterans, normally $9) and other specials at the Gulf State Park Pier. In 2017, the parks system will begin offering veteran sponsorship opportunities at other state parks throughout Alabama.

Parks has run this as a pilot program at Gulf in recent years, said Rob Grant, State Parks Assistant Director. The test demonstrates that, within a user pay system, park visitors are willing to support a discount for certain other visitors all through a voluntary program.

The Veterans Sponsorship Program began on Memorial Day 2014. Since then, 8,922 daily pier fishing discounts and 11,007 daily pier sightseeing passes have been issued to veterans at the Gulf State Park Pier. To date, more than 3,000 donations totaling almost $11,000 have been made to the program.

Those interested in making a donation can do so in person at the pier. For more information call 251-948-7275 extension 2105, email gulf.statepark@dcnr.alabama.gov, or visit www.alapark.com/sponsor-veteran.

Alabamas state parks are conveniently located throughout the state. From the mountain ranges of the north, to the beaches of Gulf State Park, recreational options abound including lodges, camping, golfing, fishing, boating, hiking, biking, swimming and much more. For more information about Alabama State Parks, visit www.alapark.com.

The Alabama State Parks Division relies on visitor fees and the support of other partners like local communities to fund the majority of their operations.  To learn more about Alabama State Parks, visit www.alapark.com.

No New Posts   Gray Trigger remains closed

November 9, 2016

From AMRD FB page.

NOAA Fisheries Announces the Gulf of Mexico Gray Triggerfish

Recreational Season will Remain Closed Through the End of 2017

NOAA Fisheries announces that gray triggerfish recreational harvest will remain closed in the Gulf of Mexico for 2017, or until further notice. NOAA Fisheries has published a temporary rule modifying the gray triggerfish recreational annual catch target to zero pounds, and the annual catch limit to 19,987 pounds whole weight for 2017, due to an estimated 221,213-pound harvest overage during the 2016 recreational fishing season.
Gray triggerfish have an accountability measure associated with its harvest that requires the sector to payback any harvest overage during the next fishing season. In 2016, the Gulf of Mexico gray triggerfish recreational landings are estimated to be 422,436 pounds. The 2017 annual catch limit and annual catch target were scheduled to be 241,200 pounds and 217,100 pounds, respectively. The harvest overage will reduce the annual catch target to zero pounds, and the annual catch limit to 19,987 pounds. NOAA Fisheries is required to close the recreational sector when landings reach or are projected to reach the ACT. Therefore, recreational harvest of gray triggerfish in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico will be closed for 2017, or until further notice.
Gulf of Mexico gray triggerfish are currently overfished (population is to low), and under a rebuilding plan which expires at the end of 2017. The Gulf of Mexico of Mexico Fishery Management Council is currently working on Amendment 46 to the Reef Fish Fishery Management Plan to establish a new gray triggerfish rebuilding plan, and modify management measures. A copy of Draft Amendment 46 can be found at http://gulfcouncil.org//B%20-%209(a)%20Amend%2046_Gray%20T
